was an effective method of obtaining information. senator's john mccain, dianne feinstein and carl levin are asking the head of sony pictures to correct the record. we believe you have an obligation to state the role of torture in the hunt for osama bin laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative. let's turn to the director of the aclu national security project. thank you so much for coming on the show. >> thank you for having me. >> the opening scene depicts the torture of a detainee. later the detainee supplies a piece of information during a meal with his interrogators. do you think the film misleads people on the hunt for bin laden, does it not provide sufficient context? >> i think the film certainly starts out with the claim that it's based on fact and it leaves the strong but entirely false impression that torture led to bin laden. and we know that that is false from the people who have reviewed the cia's records. senator's feinstein, levin and mccain are amongst the senate intelligence community personnel who reviewed millions of pages of cia documents

to the successful killing of bin laden. senators john mccain, carl levin and diane feinstein sent a letter to sony. amy davidson is a senior editor at "the new yorker" magazine and wrote a column about it. good to have you here. so the senators, they came out staunchly against the film after seeing it saying it's perpetu e perpetuating a myth. your assessment of the film? are they right that the movie takes a little creative liberty with the tortures a sne s s ss? >> it did and there was an open letter saying the head of the cia had deep troubles with the ill families and not accurate in the description of what torture did for the united states. the reason they felt the need to speak out was because this was billed as the big movie that the cia cooperated with and the pentagon. opens with recordings of people dying in the world trade center and saying it's based on actual accounts and saying it has that and then make the case we needed torture to keep us safe, that torture got us bin laden, you could see why that's department lie disturbing if as people who have seen the intelligence say it's no

dianne feinstein, carl levin, as well as republican john mccain whose own experiences as a p.o.w. in vietnam have made him an outspoken critic of torture. now, since most people have not seen the film yet, let me explain a little bit. the torture scenes, which there are more than one show cia interrogators waterboarding, humiliating, and abusing detainees. in the movie, these interrogations do result in crucial information in the search for osama bin laden. now, i would not say that the film actually glorifies torture, but the cia operatives are not squeamish about what they're doing. at a later point in the film, one of the officials complained about president obama's decision to stop the detainee program. now, in a letter to sony, which is the studio behind the film, the senators say that "zero dark thirty" is, quote, perpetuating the myth that torture is effective. they argue that a still classified report proves they called the coercive interrogations did not result in any information that led to bin laden's capture. here's what else they had to say in the letter. they sa

feinstein, carl levin, john mccain, all of whom sent a letter to sony pictures calling the film grossly inaccurate and misleading.
